In days past, many of us traveled to enjoy our time off, but with the state of the economy, it is so costly that it may not be feasible anymore. Why not consider a staycation instead of going on vacation?
You will be amazed at how much fun you can have during a "renovation staycation." Pick one room to make over completely and go to work with paint, polish up fixtures, and rearrange furniture. Try turning your bedroom into a romantic retreat by adding inexpensive touches like fuzzy pillows and cashmere throws. Updating lampshades and minor accessories can really make a world of difference in your decor.
Get out and explore a museum, library or local art gallery for a day of culture. Check out historic sites near your town and investigate what it is that makes your city or state special. New Jersey is the "Garden State," and Missouri is the "Show me State," so go to the bookstore and find out why this is so. You will have fun doing research as you do.
Since you are the one who sets the schedule during your week off, think about having a full day of "you time". Go to the day spa, get a manicure and pedicure, and do not forget the massage. This is a great opportunity to totally revamp your look with a dramatic new hairstyle. Get frivolous by adding highlights and maybe even getting a henna tattoo.

Set a theme to be followed on each night of your week off. 'Picture day" would entail seeing a movie at the theatre, complete with popcorn and candy, then a rented movie for later that night. Before the day is over, get out your digital camera and capture that beautiful sunset. "Animal day" could start with a visit to the zoo, then a night of watching animal shows on TV. "Sports day" could be a day of throwing the football around with your kids, then renting "Rudy" to watch later on.
Get outdoors and get active, weather permitting. Hiking is a great way to soak in beautiful scenery while also getting a nice workout. Camping out with friends under the stars can make you feel connected to nature for an old-fashioned and low-tech adventure.
So do not let a lack of funds stop you from having a great time during your vacation. There is always a way to find interesting and exciting places in your town without spending a fortune.
