Steve Jobs, the visionary genius who co-founded Apple in a Silicon Valley garage, has passed away at age 56. Apple announced his death in a statement late on Wednesday. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in 2004 and has battled hard for 7 years. He was one of the most important American leaders of his generation. The world is immeasurably better because of him.

Apple posted this message on its website:

“Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.”

The Silicon Valley icon who built Apple into America’s biggest company by market capitalization, resigned as chief executive in August, handing over to current chief executive Tim Cook.

Born February 24, 1955, and then adopted, Jobs grew up in Cupertino, California -- which would become home to Apple's headquarters -- and showed an early interest in electronics. As a teenager, he phoned William Hewlett, president of Hewlett-Packard, to request parts for a school project. He got them, along with an offer of a summer job at HP.

Jobs famously built the Apple I computer with Steve Wozniak in the garage of the former Steve's parents. That would lead the two Steves to found Apple Computer in 1976, along with a third co-founder, Ronald Wayne. The company would produce the very successful Apple II, the revolutionary Macintosh, and an ethos that personal computers should be usable by everyday people.

Apple has posted a memorial page for Steve Jobs and is inviting people to “share your thoughts, memories, and condolences” via email.

“No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a letter to Apple employees. “We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.”
